Antioxidants in SKINCARE | How to choose, by dermatologist Dr Davin Lim

@drdavinlim talks about antioxidants. Antioxidants are an essential part of every skin care routine
.
What are antioxidants? This group of compounds protect the skin against free radicals caused by UV & environmental pollutants. They work by taking up free electrons, in turn protecting cell membrane & function
.
Foods rich in antioxidants. Dietary needs of antioxidants are met with a balanced diet. Foods high in antioxidants include; dark chocolate, nuts, esp pecan nuts, fruits: oranges, beans, kale, spinach, cabbage, berries, blueberries, strawberries, goji, raspberries
.
What do antioxidants do for skin? Apart from normal cell function, antioxidants work by-
.
1. Protecting dermal collagen & elastic fibers, hence the role in antiaging
.
2. Reduce potential skin cancer (niacinamide studies) reduce solar keratosis rate 23 to 40%.
.
3. Pigmentation treatments, namely to reduce oxidative stress & possibly reduce pigment via blue + HEV light
.
4. Reduce inflammation & oxidative stress;acne (free fatty acids) rosacea Vitiligo, psoriasis, lupus
.
How to start skin care? The mainstream antioxidants include
.
Vitamin C or ascorbic acid. 10-20 % L ascorbic stand alone or combined with vitamin E, ferulic acids
.
Vitamin E: Tocopherol is ideal for those with sensitive skin. The most cost effective antioxidant
.
Ferulic acid: this has synergistic effects with vitamin C
.
Silimarin: derived from milk thistle, this antioxidant can help with acne & reduce the incidence of post acne marks
.
Resveratrol via grapes, berries. Studies have shown that resveratrol can reduce the risk of heart disease, cancer and neurodegeneration. Resveratrol to activates the sirtuin genes which protect our DNA

CoQ10, niacinamide
.
Polyphenols- flavonoids, green tea, ginseng
.

Antioxidants – What You Need To Know

health No Comments »

Antioxidants are man-made or natural substances that may prevent or delay some types of cell damage. Antioxidants are found in many foods, including fruits and vegetables. They are also available as dietary supplements. Examples of antioxidants include:

Beta-carotene
Lutein
Lycopene
Selenium
Vitamin A
Vitamin C
Vitamin E

Vegetables and fruits are rich sources of antioxidants. There is good evidence that eating a diet with lots of vegetables and fruits is healthy and lowers risks of certain diseases. But it isn’t clear whether this is because of the antioxidants, something else in the foods, or other factors.

High-dose supplements of antioxidants may be linked to health risks in some cases. For example, high doses of beta-carotene may increase the risk of lung cancer in smokers. High doses of vitamin E may increase risks of prostate cancer and one type of stroke. Antioxidant supplements may also interact with some medicines. To minimize risk, tell you of your health care providers about any antioxidants you use.

Antioxidants and Types of antioxidant systems

This video explains about Antioxidants and Types of antioxidant systems.

Antioxidants acts at different levels by:

Preventing the initiation of chain reactions by removing free radicals.

Interrupting chain sequence, Scavenging free radicals generated in chain reaction.

Removing peroxidases, thereby preventing further generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS).

There are three main types of antioxidant systems:

Enzymes antioxidant system

2. Vitamins antioxidant system

3. Minerals antioxidant system
